What are the barriers to learning in our school? What is Pupil Premium?
Meredith Infant School serves a diverse community where deprivation is high. There are many complex barriers towards learning that pupils need support to overcome. We mainly support our disadvantaged pupils by raising the quality of the teaching they receive. This also includes that our curriculum powerfully addresses social disadvantage. Next, we target funding on training additional support staff in proven interventions that support raising speaking and listening, reading and maths attainment. This is supported by experts such as a resident Speech and Language Therapists. Lastly, we safeguard children from being exposed to wider barriers to their learning (such as poverty factors, housing problems, parenting problems, etc). Again, this is through the support of experts which this year include a school nurse and Multi Agency Behavioural Support parent drop ins (MABS).
The pupil premium is additional funding given to schools so that they can support their disadvantaged pupils and close the attainment gap between them and their peers. It was introduced in April 2011 and is allocated to schools to work with pupils who have been registered for free school meals (FSM) at any point in the last six years. Looked after children and those of service personnel also attract funding.
The level of the premium for 2019-2020 is £1,320 per pupil fitting the criteria above for FSM children, £1,800 for Looked After Children and £300 for children from service families. This is paid directly to schools who can choose how best to allocate funding.
